Mastermind was available by the mid-1980s as a DOS program, put out by a company called Spinnaker. One competed with the computer to break codes. It was a great game in its original computer permutation, as it was/is in board-game format - still sold today. Not sure how Hasbro got involved but I suspect they acquired Spinnaker. The game is currently available in Windows along with a variety of portable apps - don't know how the modern version compares with the orginal Dos permutation.
