b1ueskycomp1ex says:Duke Nukem 3D on the N64 saw a majority of it's more adult content, violence, and subtle nudity removed or altered, dampening the game's appeal as the ultimate 13 year old boy's 90's power fantasy. However, the game does have gameplay and level design to back up it's outlandish main character and quirky one-liner delivery. The game has a large array of fairly intuitive and innovative weapons, fantastic level design, and at the time of it's original release, great graphics, sound, and interactivity.
It was one of the first games of it's kind to feature small interactive elements like being able to stop for a piss in the toilet, complete with a zip, a flush, and a witty comment about how duke feels better. In addition to this, you can shoot the toilet and watch as water springs forth from the pipes. You can shoot glass bottles and watch them shatter, comment on duke's videogame or pinball likeness, blow holes through the projection screen of an adult theater, break things, smash things, throw money at strippers, use consoles to view your enemies on security cameras, comment on your reflection in a bathroom mirror before promptly smashing the mirror to bits. There's a large array of interesting one-off items like the jetpack, steroids, a holographic distraction version of Duke that you can use to slip past or flank enemies, and so forth. If you're a fan of first generation true FPS games, Duke Nukem 3D is great.
For the time of it's release on the Nintendo 64, people were already getting used to fully 3D environments and enemies, and games had moved on, but Duke Nukem 3D is an interesting and integral part of the history of video games, and was in some ways very much ahead of it's time. The game still holds up really well today in terms of gameplay, and the N64 version of the game is no different. If you're looking for the full Duke Nukem Experience, I'd recommend the PC version(s) or one of it's enhanced ports rather than the poorly aged N64 version.
