Magical Chase (USA)TG16 |
| Magical Chase is a side scrolling shooter very similar to Graduis. An evil witch's apprentice, Ripple has disobeyed her mentor and read a forbidden magical tome and released 6 monsters into the world. It is Ripple's charge (along with her star friends Topsy and Turvy) to defeat and once again imprison the monsters. Ripple is given further incentive because if she fails, her mentor will turn her into an ugly frog forever.
Game play can become quite challenging even on easy, but the cartoon style, multiple power-ups and shops that appear along the way make things a bit more bearable. (Ripple uses gems that look like soda cans as money to purchase a variety of helpful items) each stage has a Mid-Boss (For which the stage is named after) and a Main Boss (one of the 6 monsters) that must be defeated to continue on.
Fans of the genre will have a much easier time with this one, but gamers of any skill level can pick this one up and have a lot of fun

Out Run (Japan)TG16 |
| Out Run is a timed sprint through a series of locales in your Farrari Testarossa. More time to complete the run is available if the player reaches the checkpoints, otherwise the run is over. Once the player successfully completes a run they are presented with a choice to challenge 2 more difficult runs, one of which being MUCH more difficult sort of like normal mode vs hard mode. Out Run was named of of the best driving games of its age, and for good reason. It is a very fun game, and somewhat more challenging than others given the time limit and the lowered camera angle (Compared to other games) making it more difficult to see what's coming and better simulate the perspective of someone driving the low to the ground sports car. Even crashing is made into a fun experience as you witness your driver and his female passenger hurled from the vehicle, making for a more realistic crash. I highly recommend this title as opposed to other racing titles of the age, and I suggest players of all skill levels give it a try.

Akumajou Dracula X - Chi no Rinne (NTSC-J)PCECD |
| Castlevania: Rondo of Blood (AkumajÅ Dracula X: Chi no Rondo) is a 2-D side-scrolling platformer with a gothic horror theme. Released in 1993, this game features the ability to save a player's progress, advances the plot via full-screen cutscenes, and utilizes CD audio tracks instead of the PC Engine's HUCard, producing a higher quality of musical audio.Set in the year 1792, you play as Richter Belmont, a vampire hunter. The dark priest Shaft has kidnapped Annette Renard, Richter's main love interest, and taken her to Castlevania along with a handful of other female victims. Wielding an ancestral whip imbued with holy powers to crush darkness, Richter heads out into the night alone to rescue the victims and deal out some justice, Belmont style. The game is divided up into multiple stages, some hidden, where the goal is to reach the end of each and (usually) face a boss monster. Along the way you may collect hearts from candles to power one of 6 different subweapons; the dagger, holy water, axe, cross, grimoire, and stopwatch. Each subweapon has a specific style of use and special "Item Crash" attack, which allows for an expensive but devastating super attack.Numerous hidden secrets may be found during the adventure, opening up pathways to new stages or leading to one of the four victims to rescue; one of which becomes a playable character after being freed. The victims Richter is able to rescue will affect which of the multiple endings you will see. Even if a maiden is missed, however, the player can return to any unlocked level later and take another shot at discovering any secrets they may have missed via the main menu's stage select. In summary, Rondo of Blood treats the player to some great looking graphics, serves up multiple endings, plenty of secrets to discover, offers a decent difficulty level, and a delivers a quality soundtrack to keep you company while slaying the creatures of the night. If you enjoyed the other Castlevania entries in Konami's series, you're bound to love Rondo. View Game |

R-Type Complete CD (NTSC-J)PCECD |
| One of better side scrolling space shoot em ups of the time a challenging game with a variety of levels, enemies, music scores & graphics keep you blasting through this one with out you getting the feeling you have seen all of this before.
Most levels have a huge end boss that has a weak point to be found and targeted, all the levels are different in the surroundings used and the enemies in each level, the end bosses vary as well, this is enough to not make the game feel like it is repeating itself as other shooters of the time felt like.
The ship itself has several upgrades from speed boosts, missiles an orb that acts as a frontal shield or rear shield as you can detach this and re attach it to the front or rear of the ship, this orb can be upgraded as well to give you stronger fire power and 3 variations of ammo types depending on the color of the upgrade you collected and there is one extra upgrade that can be found that will add a 2nd and 3rd orb above and bellow that acts both as a shield but also extra fire power when a certain type of ammo is used.
Even before you get any upgrade your main gun can also be charged to produce a very powerful and large shot that will take out most enemies in a single shot, this even includes bosses if you are lucky enough to time that shot just right. View Game |

Ys Book I & II [U][CD][TGXCD1002][Falcom][1990][PCE]PCECD |
| If you've not heard about Ys (pronounced "ees"), this is a great place to start. This is the beginning to Nihon Falcom's flagship series, and argueably the best version of it.
The Ys games are set in a fantasy realm and are classified as action rpg's. Book I and II use the classic "bump" system for combat, in that there are no attack buttons, so if you attack an enemy dead center you'll recieve damage, but if you attack slightly off center you'll take them down. Once you get used to this style you'll be able to mow through enemies at great speed.
Besides a refreshing combat experience, this game sports an amazing soundtrack composed by Yuzo Koshiro and arranged by Ryo Yonemitsu. It's comprised mainly of synth-rock with some incredible guitar samples.
Though the first "Book" is rather short, perhaps less than 7 hours, the second more than makes up for it in content and in length. Both are great games in their own right, but together they form a unique and satisfying style of gameplay. View Game |
Ys III - Wanderers from Ys [U][CD][TGXCD1015][Falcom][1991][PCE]PCECD |
| Departing from the overhead view and "bump" system style of combat, Ys returned as a side-scoller in it's third installment. The basic guidelines were not changed much, though. Adol has traveled to a new town, starts with 1000 gold and just as he's about to settle in something terrible happens and he's off to start his new adventure.
Adol now controls like a more traditional action platformer, with buttons for attack and jump. What seperates this game from other action platformers is how little downtime there is between attacking and defending. Unlike Castlevania where you must time your jumps and attacks quite precisely, in Ys III you may simply hold the attack button down and run through level after level with not much to stop you. This makes the enemy difficulty quite easy, until you meet a boss. The bosses have been revamped in difficulty considerably in comparison to Ys Book I and II, and you must now plan your attacks carefully before charging forward.
The music in this game is my favorite of the series by far. Now being composed solely by Mieko Ishikawa, and again, arranged by Ryo Yonemitsu, it dispenses with the handful of ambient tracks that Ys I and II had and goes full force with guitar/rock driven melodies.
Though it is considered the black sheep in the series, it's still a lot of fun, and is my favorite of them all. View Game |
