Best 16-bit ShootersA list of 7 games created by MasJ on 22nd March 2017
Gunstar Heroes (USA)Genesis
Gunstar Heroes is a side-scrolling platformer/shooter from Treasure. Its colorful art style and frenetic shooting action have earned it near universal praise.
Contra III - The Alien Wars (USA)SNES
Play as either Jimbo or Sully as you destroy aliens and ride missiles in this fast-paced, impossibly difficult shooter.
Aliens have attacked a mining colony and you are assigned to stop them. Beware we could only provide you with an experimental craft. Lets hope it works. That is the jist of the story. Fortunately, the gameplay is phenomenal. You must shoot your way through ten levels while solving puzzle to open new paths. But beware, you only have a limited amount of fuel. But fear not, you are given all you need to complete your objectives. From heavier firepower to extra energy for your shields. Its up to you to end this takeover. I should warn you. This game is considered the hardest game on the Genesis/Megadrive. If you make it to the end, you are worthy of joining the pantheon of gamers.
Sunset Riders (USA)SNES
Sunset Riders is a 2D side-scrolling, action game set in the Wild West that features four bounty hunters collecting awards on targeted outlaws.
R-Type III - The Third Lightning (USA)SNES
The official sequel to R-Type II. The game would use some of the SNES's best graphic features, including Mode 7 graphics.
MUSHA - Metallic Uniframe Super Hybrid Armor (USA)Genesis
Vertical scrolling shooter from the masters Compile. Gorgeous scrolling backgrounds and nice synth tunes set the tone for this game.
Thunder Force IV (Europe)Genesis
The fourth game in the Thunder Force series, renamed Lightening Force: Quest for the Darkstar by Sega Of America. Known as Thunder Force IV in Japan and Europe.
