King Ghidorah is running amok. Aliens are invading the Earth. Mankind's armies are powerless to stop them. All looks lost. What is mankind to do? Obviously, the only sensible solution is to develop, test, construct, and employ a mind control device in the shortest production period ever, take control of the king of the monsters, pilot him with a joystick from the comfort of your armored and heavily armed combat hovercraft without even entertaining the mere notion of providing any sort of backup or coverfire whatsoever, and punch things until they go away. Thus is the premise for Super Godzilla.
About a fifth of the game, anyway. Most of it is spent wandering around the six level maps, seeking out items and locating mission objectives. There is no other way to put this: it's slow. Moving acrosas normal ground is slow. Water is slower. Deep water gives you plenty of time to ponder life, the universe, and everything. Most of the objects in the map damage Godzila, as well, such as kicking through buildings or knocking over mountains. It's a little underwhelming when the mighty Godzilla has to walk around a mountain due to a single landmine and gets sucked into a random battle every ten steps with no reward.
The rest of the game, meanwhile, is fighting each stage's boss. This is done in a 2D fighting-style setup that plays out more like a puzzle of sorts. Both Godzilla and the boss monster have a "Fighting Spirit' gauge that increases and decreases both in a pattern and based on proximity with the opponent. Players must watch the enemy carefully, sneak in during low points in the enemy's spirit, and strike to initiate an attack. The early bosses don't make much use of this; they all have their own little abilities, but for the most part they're all for nostalgia. The last two stages, however, are where the bosses get good. The final boss in particular is a great moment, providing the only battle that doesn't play on nostalgia value and thusly has to try that much harder than the rest. It's almost enough to make up for dealing with the endless, endless identical random UFO battles. Almost.
This is a decent game for fans of the Godzilla frenchise. Not a great entry, but still worth a try. Those that aren't a fan, however, will likely not find much enjoyment.
