AquaHeartGirl rates this game: 5/5Spyro: A Hero's Tail is the fifth game in the Spyro series and the second one released on PS2. Spyro returns for another adventure as he travels through new magical lands to stop the evil ex-dragon-elder Red from taking over the world. Old friends (and enemies) return and new ones are introduced as you help Spyro collect eggs and Light Gems, while destroying Dark Gems to rid the land of Red's influence.
In addition to flame breath, Spyro can now breathe water, ice, and electricity to defeat various enemies faster and solve some puzzles. You gain the ability to double jump, climb certain walls, and teleport between different locations. Supercharging takes on a new meaning! Hunter and Sparx are playable characters in certain areas, and Sgt. Byrd is now in charge of the speedways. Venture underground for more mini-levels with a new ally, Blink the Mole. Travel through worlds of ice, volcanoes, and everything in between!
And now the review... As a fan of Spyro, I have to say this is my favorite game in the series. I love the smooth, polished graphics and fun feel of the game. The levels fit together better since you can walk between them (within each realm) rather than using portals, and they are much larger. A level here is more of an environment rather than a start-to-finish path like the earlier games. I like Spyro's breath abilities and puzzle-solving, like the water wheels and electrical machinery. But I think what I enjoy most of all about the game is the music! Each level's track really helps define the environment just as much as the visual aspect. They are all unique and exciting and diverse, yet you can tell they share a common base. Overall, this game is a huge step up from the glitchy Enter the Dragonfly. It may not be classic Spyro, but it redefines the identity of the whole series.
