ponut64 rates this game: 4/5"The Horde" for the Sega Saturn is an action-strategy game initially developed by Toys for Bob (the crew behind Star Control 2) and ported to the Saturn by Crystal Dynamics. It was a 3DO original.
The game is played in an isometric perspective using relatively simple sprites, though the sprites animate at a pleasing frame-rate. The game also features some of the better FMV sequences of its time, which lay out a childish but humorous story wherein one Chancey saves the King from choking on a piece of chicken and is then knighted and given deeds to property where you build up various villages in face of The Horde.
The game's strategic focus is squarely on building up enough cash to afford upgrades and pay taxes, in other words, defense. You never launch attacks against an enemy base, and perhaps against some other expectations, you don't build city-works like you would in Sim City. Basically, you can dig out water for moats, make fences, and most importantly, place down cows and a few knights or archers (who do not move!) to defend them. You will be killing most of the enemies yourself in the action sequences, either using your sword or other upgrades like bombs, fire breath, or a spinning mace of death.
All things considered, it is a very simple game, but it plays well and it introduces gimmicks on each world to keep things interesting.
