Game Description & Reviews:
An anime styled turn based military strategy game. With a campaign mode , an unlockable harder campaign mode, dozens of maps that can be played outside of the main missions, hidden commanders, and a hot seat multiplayer mode offers a huge amount of playable content.
Advise the commanders of the Orange Star army to retake Red Star lands from advancing Blue Moon, Green Earth, and Yellow Comet armies. Are your neighbors this bloodthirsty or is there some unknown force pulling the strings?
Many commanders with different bonuses/negatives that give a wide variety of play styles.
There is a huge number of unlockables for those who enjoy completionisting.
Computer AI is used well on the Campaign Mode and is adequate in the non campaign maps.
Game mechanics are easy to understand and use.
Graphics and music are very good.
Hot seat multiplayer and link cable multiplayer give a rare option to play against friends.
Missions are ranked based performance during the mission. Can you beat all missions and earn the highest rank?
In mission saves allow you to shut down and take a break.
The brutal military strategy mechanics might be at odds with the bright cartoonish colors and anime/manga tropes.
Some of the unlockables and challenges can be quite frustrating to achieve.
Advance wars is like a layered version of chess. It's easy to get the hang of, and the graphics and animation are both pleasing to the eye. It start off easy enough, but it has an advanced campaign (same thing as a game+ or second quest) that you unlock after beating the game that is very difficult. This game is a hidden gem, as it didn't pick up much popularity in the US due to low sales. (The cover of the box shows people smiling while riding a tank, and it was released a day or two before the 9/11 attacks.) The quality and fun factor for this game are through the roof, and you would be doing yourself an injustice to ignore it.
Advance Wars is the finest turn-based strategy game for the Gameboy Advance. With each unit having it's own attack/defense capability counter-acting other unit's, battles can become pretty intense affairs. With subliminaly defined rules as pure as chess, and with plenty of replay value this game is more addictive than chocolate football. Advance Wars will suck away your life...and leave you begging for more.
Just play it!
