Knirps rates this game: 5/5I really don't like shooters. That being said, I'm trying to start from the beginning and find a love for them as I play through the ages. This game...was actually really fun!
Controls were accurate but movement in the game is somewhat sluggish. I never felt like the player speed was meant to gimp the player. The speed seemed purposeful and worked for the flow of the game. Plus, it worked to my tastes as well because I get flustered with the hectic speed other top-down shooters play at.
Sound was good, I think. Nothing too grating or noticeably repetitive. Seemed classic and standard, fit the title perfectly.
Graphics were great. I really, really enjoyed how grotesque and detailed the bosses were! I always have to give props to degrading/changing enemies, too. The environments were passable, being detailed and crisp enough to make out everything on the screen without seeming too busy or nauseating save for a few poor floor choices.
Gameplay was mostly smooth and lightly structured. Find your mates, don't die, kill a boss. At no point did I feel lost or bored. Powerups were not overly abundant like some shooters but instead felt like 'aw yus' upgrades. I didn't expect to see things around every corner but also didn't feel starved of them either. It gave a reason to explore which I liked.
Overall, this is in my top picks for NES top-down action shooters. If you're looking into the genre but don't like the insane speed of other titles where they bombard you with 10k radial explosive shots and a thousand enemies in each room, this is for you.
Awesomator77 rates this game: 3/5A surprisingly decent unlicensed game. You are either Ricky or Mary, going around various alien spaceships and saving your comrades from the deadly aliens aboard. Plays generally smoothly with few bugs and decent, albeit slow controls.
Alien Syndrome was published in Japan by SEGA in 1987 and Sanritsu and Sunsoft in 1988.
