In amidst the steady growth of the Strategy RPG in Japan with titles such as Fire Emblem, Front Mission and Super Robot Wars during the 1990's, original developers of the latter's pre-Alpha titles Winkysoft try their hand at making their own mech-based RPG to compete with SRW. The result was Rayblade, which copies the basic premise of the Masou Kishin series developed around the same time, down to the green-haired hotheaded protagonist who pilots the eponymous mecha, not unlike SRW's Masaki Andoh and his Dunbine-esque Cybuster.
